The foundation of the World of Kangaroo Sports was laid when our founder, Vihanga—now fondly known as Coach Sonic—began taking his passion for sports a little more seriously. As a high school athlete, Sonic excelled across multiple sports, with basketball being his greatest strength. He carried this passion into his corporate life, playing for his employer, the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), at mercantile and club levels. When he moved to Australia, Sonic left behind family and friends, but not his love for sports. In search of an outlet, he began researching ways to build a backyard playing court for his spare time. What he discovered turned into something remarkable.
Coach Sonic realised that many of his friends and colleagues were trapped in the same struggle—corporate schedules, rising health risks, and families increasingly disconnected, with children absorbed in digital devices and parents too busy to engage.
That’s when he had the idea: why not build backyard courts for families and friends to reconnect, stay active, and relive the joy of playing together?
What started as a small passion project quickly spread like wildfire across northern Australia. Families began gathering again. Children left their screens for the court. Even grandparents found joy cheering on their grandchildren. As his friends would often say—“He built us a place of joy and reunion for us to enjoy—just like the old days.”
From one backyard to another, Sonic’s vision grew. He wasn’t just transforming spaces—he was transforming lifestyles. What started with basketball soon expanded into pickleball, tennis, and volleyball courts, each built with the same care, precision, and purpose.
As backyard courts created a surge of enthusiastic players, a new demand arose—a place for the community to come together. This led to the opening of Kangaroo Indoor Sports in Pakenham, Melbourne. This state-of-the-art facility became home to a wide range of sports, including basketball, cricket, badminton, futsal, and pickleball. Beyond sports, it evolved into a community hub, hosting birthdays, private events, and celebrations. Kangaroo Indoor Sports became more than a court—it became a destination for union, joy, and belonging.
Sonic knew that true community meant inclusion. That’s why Kangaroo Sports made it a mission to create spaces and coaching opportunities for people with disabilities. By training and developing inclusive programs, Kangaroo ensured that everyone had a place to play, grow, and belong.
What began as a personal journey has now grown into a holistic sports lifestyle venture—bringing together families, communities, and athletes under one vision: to build spaces that inspire active, connected, and inclusive living.

Coach Sonic (Vihanga) is the Founder & CEO of Kangaroo Courts Pty Ltd. At Present, he focuses more on coaching and serves as the Head Coach of Kangaroo Sports Basketball Academy. A passionate mentor and visionary leader, he has coached and inspired young athletes in Australia and Sri Lanka, while also building Kangaroo Sports into a growing international brand. Recognized with the La Trobe University Award for Youth & Community Development (2025), he brings together business expertise, community leadership, and a love for sport to create lasting impact for athletes and families alike.
Vihanga, the founder and CEO of Kangaroo Courts Pty Ltd and the driving force behind Kangaroo Sports, is more than just a basketball coach — he is a mentor, entrepreneur, and community builder. As Head Coach of Kangaroo Courts Basketball Academy and Representative Coach at the Pakenham Warriors, Coach Sonic has helped shape hundreds of young athletes, guiding them not only in technical skills but also in discipline, teamwork, and confidence. His coaching philosophy focuses on holistic development — ensuring every child grows both on and off the court. Parents trust him for his motivational leadership, structured training programs, and ability to inspire children from as young as five years old to competitive teenage athletes aiming for higher-level opportunities.
Beyond coaching, Vihanga has built Kangaroo Sports into a fast-growing initiative across Australia and Sri Lanka. Under his leadership, the company has expanded into sports facility management, athlete development programs, and sports event hosting, creating a pathway for franchise opportunities in two continents. His ability to combine business acumen with sports leadership has been recognized with the La Trobe University Award for Youth & Community Development (2025).
